About Tom Hogg
I was born and brought up in the West End of Glasgow and moved to Edinburgh in 1988, shortly after qualifying as a chartered building surveyor. Those were the boom times of the 1980s, with my first flat going up in value by 50% in the course of 18 months. As the history books now show, all that came to an end in the early 1990’s when life became much harder for anyone in property. Redundancies were common and I was not immune.
I’ve worked exclusively in private practice with various firms, some local, others London based and all diverse in nature. From my first job with a Glasgow property management firm, to my most recent, with one of Scotland’s top property consultancies, I’ve seen a recurring theme of reluctance to apply lateral thought and absorb modern business practices. That’s not a sustainable business model in any sense of the word and part of the reason that I left a secure, well paid job to set up Objective.
The person that I most admire in business is the late Anita Roddick who tried her very best to stick to principles of fairness and equality whilst at the same time running a huge commercial enterprise.
I’m not naturally gregarious, but I love being in a football crowd. I spend weekends with my family and I read avidly, possibly more than thirty books a year (and none about property…).
